    What are Basix Certificates

    A Basix assessment and corresponding certificate summarises the sustainability commitments that a development will include. The Basix Assessment process considers four criteria:

    Water Use
    Thermal Comfort (how much energy it takes to keep the house at a comfortable temperature)
    Energy Use
    Materials Index (how much carbon emissions

    Following the assessment, the chosen sustainability commitments will be in incorporated into the design and can include:

    Rainwater tanks and water-efficient fixtures
    Solar PV systems
    Double glazing and insulation
    Efficient lighting
    Water efficient plants

    Why and when do I need a Basix Certificate

    Basix Certificates are only required within New South Wales and are required at the Development Application stage of a project which is:

    New single dwellings, duplexes, townhouses, multi units etc.
    An alteration or addition to an existing building valued at $50,000 or more
    An alteration or addition to an existing building valued at $50,000 or more

    In addition to the above, there are also less common occurrences requiring a Basix Certificate such as Boarding Houses, Hostels and Backpacker Accommodation.

    How do I get a Basix Certificate

    Once the Development Application drawings have been prepared, the Green Rate Team will review and provide a detailed quotation. Once approved, the Green Rate Team will begin the assessment utilizing the following steps:

    Review of provided plans
    Thermal Comfort(7 star) assessment using Home Energy Rating Software
    Water, Energy and Materials Components of the Basix Assessment Undertaken
    Preliminary Basix Certificate shared to the client for review
    Basix Certificate is finalised following confirmation from the client
